APPENDIX D

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION (AED) GUIDELINES

* The AED should not be turned off unless an ambulance is present and the patient can be transported immediately. The reason for this is that if additional defibrillations are required they can be delivered at the highest automatic setting possible. If the AED must be turned off (e.g., for patient movement purposes) and it is later determined that the patient may require additional defibrillations, the AED may be turned on and the patient defibrillated in "stacked" shocks, beginning with the AED setting which the machine automatically reverts to.
