Medical Control Options
557 PEDIATRIC STATUS EPILEPTICUS
For pediatric patients in Status Epilepticus (seizure remains ongoing at the time of arrival of EMS):
- Begin Basic Life Support Seizures procedure.
During transport, or if transport is delayed:
- Administer Glucagon 1.0 mg, IM. (See Appendix J.)
- If seizure persists, contact Medical Control for implementation of one or more of the following options:
- OPTION A:
- Begin an IV (IO) infusion of Ringer's Lactate (RL), to keep vein open. Attempt IV or IO only once each.
- OPTION B:
- Administer 25% Dextrose 0.5 gm/kg, IV (IO) bolus. (See Appendix J). The initial dose may be repeated only once.
- OPTION C:
- Administer Diazepam 0.2 mg/kg, IV (IO) bolus. Rate of administration may not exceed 1.0 mg/min. (See Appendix J.)
- NOTE:
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START IV (IO) ADMINISTRATION OF DIAZEPAM IF THE
SEIZURES HAVE STOPPED.
- OPTION D:
- Transportation decision.
