Medical Control Options
550 PEDIATRIC RESPIRATORY ARREST
In pediatric patients in actual or impending respiratory arrest:
- Begin Basic Life Support Pediatric Respiratory Distress/Failure procedures.
- NOTE:
DO NOT OVEREXTEND NECK. IF AN OBSTRUCTED AIRWAY IS SUSPECTED, SEE PROTOCOL #551.
- Begin Assisted Ventilations.
- Perform Endotracheal Intubation only when other methods of airway control are not effective.
During transport, or if transport is delayed:
- Administer Naloxone 2.0 mg, IM, in patients two (2) years of age or older. Use half the amount (1.0 mg) of this drug in patients less than two (2) years of age. (See Appendix J.)
- If abdominal distension occurs pass a Nasogastric Tube.
- Contact Medical Control for implementation of one or more of the following options:
- OPTION A:
- Begin an IV (IO) infusion of Ringer's Lactate (RL), to keep vein open. Attempt IV or IO only once each.
- OPTION B:
- Administer Naloxone 2.0 mg, IV (IO) bolus, or via the Endotracheal Tube, in patients two (2) years of age or older. Use half the amount (1.0 mg) of this drug in patients less than two (2) years of age. (See Appendix J.)
- OPTION C:
- Transportation decision.
