Networks

WAN -- Wide Area Networks -- AT&T had a monopoly over the phones in the 1960's so they were not allowed to enter the computer business. IBM had the unofficial monopoly over computers and they couldn't get into the telephone business. To develop good phones, you need the computer so computers were developed more. The operating system UNIX was created and it was given out to Universities. UNIX was developed more and more and became the dominant operating system (OS) for research. This is how the WAN began.
UUCP -- UNIX to UNIX copy program. It allows you to copy files from one UNIX machine to another by the telephone.
Fidonet -- Apple set up a similar idea to the UNIX method. It became too complicated because there were so many ways to get somewhere. Then the Dept. of Defense got involoved and put money into it so it was developed more.
Arpenetwork -- You could use the store and forward system where UNIX was its base.
Darpenet -- The same as arpenet except it was more secure.
Bitnet -- Now people became even more connected. Many colleges began to pay for a line directly to the CUNY SYS so many colleges were connected to each other. Cuny allowed anyone to hook up as long as they hooked two others hooked up to them. This was called Bitnet.
NYSENET -- It was a high speed link which attached to the high speed network of the U.S.
The Internet -- More and more states began to hook up and eventually it was known as the Internet.
